Choosing Faith in Times of Uncertainty

Acts 1:15-26

My Beloved Greenwood,

In these verses, we find the early church grappling with a profound decision—choosing a new leader to replace Judas Iscariot. This moment of discernment occurs in a climate of uncertainty and anticipation, much like our own as we approach a pivotal presidential election. As we gather here in our beloved church, let us draw wisdom from the early disciples’ experience.

1. Unity in Purpose (Acts 1:15-17) The passage begins by highlighting the unity of believers, all together in prayer and supplication. Before making any decisions, they sought God collectively. In our time, we must also come together, united in our purpose to seek what is good, just, and right for our community and country. We are called to pray earnestly, not only for the outcome of the election but for wisdom and discernment in our choices.

2. Acknowledgment of Our Past (Acts 1:18-19) Peter speaks of Judas’s betrayal and the tragic consequences that followed. As we reflect on our past, we recognize the struggles and injustices faced by our people. The scars of history remind us that the fight for justice, equality, and righteousness is ongoing. Let us not forget our journey, but let it inspire us to choose leaders who align with our values and aspirations.

3. Seeking God’s Will (Acts 1:20-24) The disciples turned to Scripture to guide their decision, demonstrating the importance of anchoring our choices in the Word of God. As we prepare to cast our votes, let us seek leaders whose vision resonates with biblical principles of love, justice, and mercy. We can pray for divine guidance, asking God to open our eyes to the truth amidst the noise and chaos of political discourse.

4. Trusting in God’s Sovereignty (Acts 1:25-26) The disciples ultimately cast lots to choose between two candidates, showing their trust in God’s sovereignty over the decision. While our elections may feel like a gamble at times, we are reminded that God is in control. Our faith calls us to act—voting is our duty, but we must also remember that our hope lies not solely in human leaders but in the God who reigns above.

Conclusion: A Call to Action

As we stand on the brink of this election, let us embody the spirit of the early church: praying, acknowledging our history, seeking God’s will, and trusting in His plans. Let us remember that our voices matter, that our votes are an extension of our faith. Together, may we strive for a future where good triumphs over evil, where justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream (Amos 5:24).

Let us pray for peace, for wisdom, and for the courage to act justly. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Pemberton
