Fishers of People

Matthew 4:19-20 (NIV)

"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people." At once they left their nets and followed him.

Reflection:

My beloved Greenwood,

In this powerful moment, Jesus calls His first disciples by the shores of the Sea of Galilee. He invites them not just to follow Him, but to join in His mission to reach others. This passage resonates deeply with our community, reminding us of the transformative power of obedience and faith.

Imagine the scene: the sun rising over the water, the sound of nets being cast, and then, the voice of the Savior calling. These fishermen were not just leaving their jobs; they were stepping into a new identity and purpose. Similarly, God calls each of us from our everyday lives—our roles as parents, workers, friends—into a greater mission of love and service.

Key Points:

  1. The Call to Follow: Jesus invites us to follow Him daily, which requires a willingness to let go of our comforts and familiar routines. What might you need to release in your life to fully embrace His call?

  2. The Promise of Purpose: The promise that follows the call is significant: “I will send you out to fish for people.” Our journey of faith is not just for our own growth but is meant to impact others. Who in your life needs to see the light of Christ through your actions and words?

  3. Immediate Obedience: The disciples left their nets “at once.” This speaks to the urgency of our response to God’s call. When we sense His prompting, do we hesitate, or do we act? Let’s cultivate a heart that responds swiftly to His voice.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, thank You for calling us to follow You. Help us to discern Your voice amid the noise of our lives. Give us the courage to leave behind our nets—our doubts, fears, and distractions—to embrace the mission You have set before us. May our lives be a testament to Your love, drawing others closer to You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Call to Action:

This week, take a moment to reflect on how you can follow Christ’s example in your daily interactions. Consider ways to reach out to someone in your community, whether through acts of kindness, sharing your testimony, or simply offering a listening ear. Let us be fishers of people, bringing hope and healing to our neighbors.

Amen,

Pastor Pemberton
